KUCHING (Feb 21): Recent tuberculosis (TB) cases in Sarawak have raised concerns among the public, but Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has assured that the situation is far from a pandemic.
Speaking at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Ramadan Bazaar in Stutong here after giving out bubur lambuk to shoppers, Dr Sim said TB cases in the state are classified as endemic and remain under control.
However, he urged corporate bodies to play a more active role in public health initiatives, particularly in improving access to early screening and detection.
During a recent visit to the Bintulu Health Department, Dr Sim, who is also State Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, highlighted the donation of four handheld X-ray machines by a local aluminium extrusion company.
“With these devices, health teams can now go directly to longhouses and remote areas, instead of bringing patients to clinics or hospitals for X-ray examinations,” he said, adding that such efforts are crucial in reaching underserved communities.
Dr Sim also reminded the public to maintain good hygiene to curb the spread of TB, praising practices observed at the Ramadan Bazaar.
“I noticed that nowadays food handlers are wearing gloves, hats and aprons. These are the minimum measures that we can take, and we want to thank the stallholders for their cooperation,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said vendors are required to submit the necessary documentation and undergo health checks before being allowed to operate at the bazaar.
He said the Sarawak Health Department would also conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance.
“That is why, after the selection process, the Health Department will carry out its rounds.
“We want to make sure that not only is the food reasonably priced, but that it is also hygienic and safe for consumption,” he said.
Also present were deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, councillors and other guests.
