KUCHING, Sept 21: Sarawak is set to embark on an ambitious project to construct a state-of-the-art Kuching International Airport, similar to Doha’s, with the capacity to accommodate 15 million passengers annually.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg underscored the importance of this development as a vital step towards establishing a Sarawak-owned airline, which is projected to materialise by the end of this year.
“We need people to come to Sarawak, and for that, the plane is needed for them to come here. Hopefully, by the end of this year, we could have our own airline to bring and enable more visitors to reach Sarawak easily,” he stated during a brief address at the ‘Night At The Museum’ event held at the Borneo Cultures Museum, which was broadcast live through Ukas channels tonight.
The Sarawak government is currently negotiating to take over MASwings as part of its effort to establish its own airline, aimed at addressing high ticket prices during festive seasons and improving connectivity to the region.
This move is seen as a vital strategy to enhance both tourism and business travel, making Sarawak more accessible to regional and international visitors.
Abang Johari emphasised that the new Kuching International Airport will feature a modern, fully automated design, ensuring a seamless and efficient experience for passengers.
“With advanced technology, travellers will be able to check in and board their flights effortlessly.
“But of course, it will take time. We anticipate the airport will take around three to five years to complete,” he explained.
This infrastructure development is expected to significantly streamline travel processes for tourists and business visitors alike, further positioning Sarawak as a premier event and travel destination in the region.
“With an increase in visitor numbers, I am confident that Sarawak will rise as a central hub for events and tourism,” he concluded, envisioning a future where Sarawak’s vibrant culture and natural beauty attract even more global attention.
Previously, Abang Johari pointed out the limitations of the existing Kuching International Airport, noting that it can no longer handle the growing number of flights and passengers.
The new airport is part of Sarawak’s broader vision to become a regional aviation hub in Asean.
Additionally, Sarawak is moving forward with plans to build a deep seaport, positioning Sarawak as an international sea hub and further boosting its status as a key player in regional trade and travel. — DayakDaily
