KUCHING, June 18: Sarawak is set to establish its first Borneo international-standard glass squash court, an RM8 million facility expected to bolster preparations for the co-hosting of the 2027 SEA Games while reinforcing the State’s ambition to become a regional sports and sports tourism hub.

According to a TVS report, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said the project reflects the State government’s continued commitment to providing world-class sporting infrastructure.

“This glass court can be used for both singles and doubles events, making it suitable for hosting various international-level tournaments,” he said.

He noted that glass courts are now the preferred standard in international squash competitions due to their superior visibility for television broadcasts.

“With improved lighting systems, the movement of the ball and players’ actions can be seen more clearly by spectators,” he added while speaking to reporters at the 3rd Asian Doubles 2026 Championship Welcoming Dinner held at a hotel here on Wednesday (June 17).

Gerald said the facility will also play a key role in developing local squash talent and strengthening Sarawak’s sports tourism offerings.

He added that the project will include supporting amenities for athletes, officials and visitors, ensuring a complete event-ready environment.

The venue will accommodate up to 800 spectators, providing a more comfortable and engaging experience for the public.

Gerald said the development will further enhance Sarawak’s readiness for the 2027 SEA Games and strengthen its profile as a preferred destination for international sporting events. — DayakDaily
