Sarawak to push for Southeast Asian power grid under Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship 

SINGAPORE: Sarawak is set to take full advantage of Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of Asean next year to accelerate the establishment of the Asean Power Grid, a regional energy initiative that promises to enhance energy cooperation among Southeast Asian nations.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Malaysia’s leadership of Asean will serve as a key platform for advancing discussions on the Asean Power Grid.

He noted that ongoing talks with Singapore and Indonesia remain productive, with Sarawak poised to play a significant role in supplying power to the grid.

Abang Johari expressed optimism that Malaysia will use its position as the Asean chair next year to drive more focused and serious discussions on the Asean Power Grid.

“This has to be a joint decision among the Asean countries, and we only act as a power supplier. I am sure it will be finalised soon.

“And next year, Malaysia as the Asean chair will start further discussions on this matter,” he said during a press conference after attending the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) on Monday (Oct 21).

He also revealed that the grid’s infrastructure could be in place by 2030.

Abang Johari explained that the target for completing the infrastructure is set for 2030, as laying the submarine cables alone is expected to take at least three years.

“Additionally, there is another project that will help Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) increase its capacity to supply renewable energy to Peninsular Malaysia,” he added.

Sarawak’s delegation to SIEW included Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abg Hipni, and Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.

Laos officially handed over the Asean chairmanship to Malaysia during the closing ceremony of the 44th and 45th Asean Summits on Oct 14.

In a symbolic gesture, Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone passed the gavel to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, marking the transition as Malaysia gears up to lead Asean in 2025 under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’.
