BINTULU (Oct 16): The SeRancak Green Environment 2024 programme was conducted at SK Rancangan Sepupok in Subis recently, utilising the Service Learning Malaysia (Sulam) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) approaches.
The two-day event, which concluded on Oct 11, gathered 150 participants including students and lecturers of Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB), as well as students and the administrative staff of SK Rancangan Sepupok.
This year’s programme continued the legacy of the previous flora and fauna day celebrations, with SK Rancangan Sepupok inviting UPMKB representatives to collaborate on the environmental day programme during the school’s dedicated STEM Week.
Dr Ahmad Mustapha Mohamad Pazi, a lecturer in Forest Ecology, led the first-semester Diploma in Forestry students in implementing the Sulam programme through community-based learning methods, meant to address environmental issues faced in rural schools.
Key activities included the landscape greening programme, which involved planting trees in the compound of the primary school’s new building block, creating a greener environment.
Moreover, demonstrations were also conducted on ways to make compost from food waste and organic materials such as dried leaves and grasses, providing practical knowledge on waste management and resource conservation.
Other activities included aerobics with the SeRancak FC team, recreational sports, and the ‘SeRancak Green Environment Cultural Night’.
