MIRI, 5 Oct: The ScamBusters team from SMK Lutong emerged champions of Shell NXplorers 2026 Sarawak Challenge through the innovation of ScamShield, thus qualifying them to represent Sarawak at national level.
The team of Muhammad Labeeb Aryan Mohd Lokman, Deborah Wong En Xuan and Isabelle Hii Yi Shin has created an Android app that helps users identify suspicious messages, links and phone numbers to protect them from fraud.
The ScamShield app also comes with easy-to-understand warnings in English and Malay and can work without constantly relying on internet access.
Second place was won by Theory team from Bintulu City School through ElderCare AI, a smart drug management system that helps users take medicines on schedule.
The system also automatically prepares the drug, provides alerts and informs the guards if a dose is missed or detects abnormal body temperature.
Both teams will represent Sarawak at the Shell NXplorers Malaysia Challenge scheduled to take place later this month.
The Most Innovative Award has been won by the Nerd Inc team from Bintulu New School through Calm Meadow, a digital wellness platform that provides a safe and secretive space for students to get mental health-related support.
Shell NXplorers is a global education program that challenges students to use critical and systemic thinking to create solutions to real-world challenges related to food, water and energy.
Sarawak Central Luconia General Manager, Shell Malaysia Upstream, Choong Yen Li said the programme is important in shaping a young generation capable of thinking creatively and solving complex problems.
"The challenges facing the world are increasingly complex and require a new generation of thinkers, creators and problem solvers", he said in a statement today.
Eight schools participated in this year's Sarawak level challenge, including Bintulu City School, Baru Bintulu School, Bintulu School, Bau School, Lutong School, Pujut School, Sains Miri School and Taman Tunku School.
Shell NXplorers Malaysia with the support of the Malaysian Ministry of Education involved over 600 students from 29 schools across the country, including 183 participants from Sarawak, while about 1,000 students also benefited through peer learning. - TVS
