KUCHING, Nov 14: Ceiling replacement work was previously performed for Ward 26 of the Sibu Hospital, but due to a variety of factors, including mould issues and water condensation, the ceiling became exposed, Sarawak State Health Department (JKNS) director Dr Ooi Choo Huck has clarified.

It was reported on Nov 12 that a section of the exposed ceiling in Ward 26 of the Sibu Hospital poses a major concern to patients.

A member of the public noticed that the section is near the far end of the ward and that mould was growing on some areas near the ceiling.

Water was also seen dripping from the ceiling and collecting in a pail placed on the floor.

“Reports have indicated that issues with water condensation and mold in the ward have been occurring since 2019. Sibu Hospital has completed the repair work. However, the issue of condensation still persists.

“Following the completion of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) ward upgrade in 2022, issues related to condensation and mould became increasingly noticeable.

“After conducting an investigation, the concession company has recommended a comprehensive repair for the cold water piping system, including the installation of insulation,” said Dr Ooi in a statement issued today.

He went on to say that the wards that are currently in use are part of the Sibu Hospital, which serves as the main specialist hospital in the Central Sarawak Zone.

“The closure of the affected wards may cause disruptions to clinical services and inpatient specialist treatment for the Central Sarawak Zone.

“Sibu Hospital has taken proactive steps to minimise the risk of injuries. These measures include the installation of slippery floor markings, drip trays, and safety nets.

“Additionally, JKNS has submitted an application for approval of an allocation from the ministry,” he added. — DayakDaily
