SIBU: The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), in collaboration with Amcorp Sibujaya, has once again pulled off a resounding success with their iconic annual event, the Sibu Jaya Water Fiesta, drawing over 20,000 enthusiastic participants.

Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said that this year’s celebration is more successful than in previous years.

“This is the third time I have attended, three consecutive years, and I greatly enjoy this festival. From what I have observed over the past three years, this year is the best yet, more organised than previous years.

“I understand that today, more than 20,000 locals, as well as visitors from afar, such as Bintulu and other areas, have gathered here to join in the festivities,” he said to reporters after officiating the programme at Sibu Jaya Boulevard here today (Sept 21).

Abdul Karim, who is also Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, stressed that the event has immense benefits as children, parents, and even grandparents, all came together.

“This indicates that during school holidays or weekends like this, it provides an opportunity for family bonding. Parents bring their children to enjoy and celebrate together in a programme like this.

“For the entrepreneurs and shop owners present, they too reap benefits. This is a very appealing event, and it is the only one of its kind in Sarawak — a water festival similar to what we see in the Songkran festival in Thailand,” he added.

He congratulated the organisers for their success in organising the event and pledged full support from his ministry to ensure that the event will be organised annually.

This year which was the fifth edition of the event was held in conjunction with the Sibu Jaya Carnival.
