SIBU (April 7): A 58-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a violent attack at an eatery near a night market here, which sparked concern after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
Sibu police chief ACP Azari Miskon said the suspect is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a weapon.
“The suspect has been detained and police have obtained a six-day remand order until April 12 to facilitate investigations,” he said when contacted.
The recent incident is believed to have occurred in the early hours at a coffee shop in the vicinity of the night market, where patrons were gathering and socialising.
Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident showed the suspect approaching the victim from behind before launching a sudden attack, catching those present off guard.
The situation quickly turned chaotic as the victim’s companions sprang into action, confronting the attacker and forcing him to flee.
Dramatic CCTV footage rapidly spread online and enabled the police to move swiftly to track down the suspect.
The case is under investigation and the motive for the attack has yet to be established.
