SIBU: The police in the city have the capability to combat crime and should take a zero-tolerance approach, says Dudong assemblyman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

In a press release issued in response to a shooting in Sibu, Tiong said that there is a need to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents and urged the police to solve the case quickly.

He also said that the police should use strong measures against criminal gangs

"I also appeal to the public to provide information to the police and cooperate with the investigation to apprehend the trigger-happy criminals and eliminate this threat to our society," said Tiong.

He added that the police must enhance patrols in sensitive areas and law enforcement efforts in the future.

"We must aim to eradicate local criminals and criminal activities to prevent any incidents that could threaten public safety," said the Bintulu MP.

On the shooting on Monday (Jan 1) at Jalan Wong King Huo here, Tiong said that it has sent shockwaves through Sibu.

"This episode has raised concerns about the possibility of the widespread availability of firearms in Sibu, leading to deep anxiety about personal safety," said Tiong.

In the 4.55pm incident on Monday, three men sustained bodily injuries on their thigh, leg and hand.

One of the suspects fired at close range at the victims while the other one did the same from a distance of 20 metres before speeding off.
