MIRI, Jan 3: Six young Japanese exchange students are in Miri to experience the local culture and gain a broader understanding of the world.

The students aged 16 to 22-years-old are Lions Youth Exchange (YE) programme participants from Japan who arrived in Miri on January 1 for the one-week programme.

The Lions Youth Exchange programme is held to provide today’s youths who are leaders of tomorrow, the
opportunity to learn about people and cultures other than their own in an effort to promote world peace.

Japanese YE students were given the opportunity to live with Lions host families during the programme to learn new cultures firsthand.

The ultimate goal is to have each participant share his or her experiences upon returning home in line with promoting international understanding.

The students are scheduled to visit Niah National Park, a handicraft centre, Canada Hill, Coco Cabana, Tanjung Lobang Beach, Piasau Nature Reserve Park, Curtin University and many more.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew hosted the welcoming dinner for the Japanese students and Lions last night (Jan 2).

Yii pointed out that this youth exchange under the Lions Club allowed the two countries to share about each other’s culture, customs, life, and more to establish closer ties, and would help promote Sarawak.

He hoped that the Japanese visitors would eat delicious food in Miri and visit some tourist attractions worth sightseeing, and help promote Miri’s tourist places when they return to Japan.

District Governor 308-A2 Kapitan Ronny Hiew Ah Choi thanked to Yii for hosting the welcoming dinner and meeting the six students when they paid him a courtesy call at Miri City Hall. — DayakDaily
