KUALA LUMPUR, 16 Oct: Six chips developed by local companies have the potential to generate an overall sales value of up to RM300 million, said Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.
According to him, the achievement proves that local companies are able to develop their own semiconductor technology, thus strengthening the country's capacity in the industry.
"Malaysia already has strength, particularly in terms of expertise at the end of semiconductor industrial chain, including testing, equipment and chip packaging.
"At the same time, Malaysia has also partnered with ARM Limited to gain access to design IP.
"The government is also investing in talent development to strengthen the nation's capabilities in chip design industry", he said when meeting with reporters after the Inaugural Meeting of AiSEM@SELANGOR 2026 and Six Semiconductor Innovative Chips Launched here today.
It was attended by the Chief Minister of Selangor, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
Commenting further, he said the production of the six chips shows that efforts to develop a local integrated circuit (IC) design ecosystem are beginning to bear fruit.
However, he said that continued commitment is needed to ensure Malaysia continues to develop expertise and keep pace with the development of advanced semiconductor technology.
Meanwhile, reviewing the development of local design chips in Sarawak and Selangor, he said cooperation between the Federal Government and state governments is important to coordinate efforts and take advantage of each state.
He said that each state has its own expertise and advantages in the semiconductor industrial value chain, which is why coordination is essential to ensure that investments can complement each other and support the development of the country's industrial ecosystem.
"As a small country, we need to rely on each other's strengths and ensure that all states work together in developing the nation's semiconductor industry.
"This is because each state has different expertise, skills and advantages that can complement each other in strengthening the respective industrial ecosystems", he said. - TVS
