SIBU (Jan 29): Sibu should be given due attention and be included in the rollout of major programmes under Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026), said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting.
Highlighting the national significance of VMY2026, Ting called on the council’s administration to take proactive steps by submitting applications to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture to request that more VMY2026-related programmes be implemented in Sibu.
“Sibu deserves greater attention and should be included in the rollout of major programmes under this initiative,” he said during the council’s full meeting here yesterday.
Ting also expressed hope that the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who is also the Dudong assemblyman, would help bring VMY2026-related programmes to the town.
“I hope this can be realised for the benefit of tourism development and the local economy,” he added.
On a separate matter, Ting advised the councillors to ensure that projects under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) in their respective areas are properly monitored.
“The implementation of RTP projects must be expedited and given serious attention,” he said, adding that councillors can communicate directly with the officers in charge of the projects to ensure smooth implementation.
He further stressed that any issues related to project implementation should be reported immediately to enable prompt follow-up action instead of waiting until the end of the year.
