SIBU: Innovation in local government should be measured by how effectively it meets the needs of the people rather than by technological advancement alone.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee’s special assistant Boston Ho said the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) must balance the need for progress with a willingness to listen and respond to public feedback.
“Any innovation introduced by the Council must not only achieve administrative or technological progress, but must also serve the needs and interests of the people,” he said.
Ho said this when representing Tiang at the launch of the SMC Innovation cum Customer’s Day 2026 at Wisma Sanyan here yesterday (Oct 3).
He acknowledged that new initiatives would not always gain immediate public acceptance, citing the Smart Parking System, which had drawn concerns over its application, payment process, enforcement and challenges faced by some senior citizens.
At the same time, he said local authorities could also face criticism for failing to keep pace with technological developments if they were slow to introduce changes.
“This reflects the reality faced by local government. Many decisions affect the daily lives of the people and will naturally attract differing views,” he said.
Ho stressed that while councils must have the courage to implement necessary reforms, they should also acknowledge shortcomings and make adjustments when required.
“Innovation should not be expected to produce a perfect system from the first day of implementation. What is important is the willingness to listen, improve and adapt,” he said.
He added that Customer’s Day provided an important platform for the public to better understand the Council’s responsibilities while allowing SMC to receive feedback directly from the community.
Ho also commended SMC chairman Councillor Clarence Ting, councillors and council staff for implementing policies, responding to public complaints and resolving issues in their daily operations.
He said SMC’s future progress should be guided by a balance between having the courage to move forward and the humility to listen.
“If we can maintain this balance, I believe SMC will continue to strengthen public confidence and deliver better services for the people of Sibu,” he said.
The programme also featured an innovation showcase, departmental booths, competitions, games and other activities aimed at strengthening interaction between SMC and the public.
