KANOWIT (Dec 10): Sarawak Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, has expressed satisfaction with the overall structural condition of SMK Kanowit following a working visit yesterday.
The Nangka assemblyman was briefed on the school’s infrastructure, academic performance, and pressing needs.
He noted that the new school buildings mark a significant improvement over the old structures.
“From the structural aspect, the school has improved a lot compared to the previous buildings, and I am generally satisfied,” Dr Annuar told reporters.
“However, there are areas that still need enhancement, particularly the laboratories and some of the furniture. We will work on that.”
He was particularly pleased with the school’s strong academic achievements over the past five years.
“I was briefed on their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) performance, and the school’s average grade has improved to better than the national average,” he said.
“There are many students achieving 5As and above, and more than 50 students qualify for foundation programmes in Sarawak government universities.”
During the visit, the school also appealed for new hostels to replace the existing boys’ and girls’ dormitories, which are currently rated at scale six.
“We will look into it. If possible, we hope it can be included under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). If not, we will explore other ways to ensure the hostels can be upgraded,” he said.
He emphasised that improving hostel conditions is essential, especially for rural students who depend on boarding facilities to access education.
Dr Annuar also reminded teachers and the school leaders of the importance of guiding next year’s Form 4 and Form 5 students to select subject packages – particularly Packages A and C – that align with opportunities under the free tertiary education initiative offered by the Sarawak government.
“It is crucial that students choose subjects that match what is offered under free tertiary education. Otherwise, they might miss out on the benefits of the scheme,” he said.
His visit to SMK Kanowit is part of the ministry’s ongoing engagement with schools to assess needs, monitor performance, and support the state’s long-term educational transformation agenda.
Also present were Machan assemblyman Allan Siden, Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana, Kanowit District Education Officer Yakub Jai, and SMK Kanowit acting principal Andrew Atan.
