KUCHING: SMK St Teresa clinched the first runner-up position and received the prestigious Best Community Engagement Award at the 2023/2024 Toyota Eco Youth Programme (TEY).
The annual event, organised by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE), served as a platform to highlight the significant impact of environmental education on the younger generation.
Reflecting on the programme’s influence on youth, UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk Ravindran K said: “The impact of programmes like TEY on the younger generation is immeasurable. From its inception in 2001 to the present edition in 2023, TEY has consistently played a pivotal role in shaping the environmental consciousness of our youth.
“As UMW Toyota Motor, we proudly align with Toyota’s global commitment to contribute to a better environment for the next generation. TEY, with its objectives, mission, and vision, reflects our dedication to educating the younger generation through innovative methods like the Toyota 8 Steps Problem Solving Methodology.”
The exhibition of projects, held on Jan 22, featured all 15 schools showcasing their projects. The closing ceremony was held from the Jan 21 to 23 at Everly Hotel, Putrajaya.
The programme is aimed at empowering secondary school students to actively engage with environmental issues through innovative initiatives.
In the latest edition, 15 schools from across the nation, represented by 60 students and 15 teacher advisors, showcased projects aimed at tackling specific environmental concerns within their communities.
The heart of TEY lies in its Problem Solving Methodology (PSM), guiding students to devise creative solutions to environmental challenges.
The projects, ranging from local recycling issues to broader community-based problems, demonstrate the students’ keen awareness of environmental issues affecting their communities.
SMK Seri Ampang in Kedah was crowned champion, with SMK Raja Puan Muda Tengku Fauziah in Perlis securing third place in the competition.
