Sng claims that a recent survey found that Sarawak’s Malay and Dayak communities had no issue with their non-Bumiputera counterparts having the same status and privileges.

KUCHING (March 26): The Sarawak government should consider granting Bumiputera status to third-generation Sarawakians of Chinese descent, Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng said.

He claimed that a recent survey found that Sarawak’s Malay and Dayak communities had no issue with their non-Bumiputera counterparts having the same status and privileges.

Speaking on The Tuak Talk online show recently, the Parti Bangsa Malaysia president said the survey was conducted after he had suggested in March last year that Sarawak’s Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera be on equal footing.

“After my (initial) statement on the issue, there was actually a survey done. And according to the people who were surveyed, the Malay community had no objections; the Dayak community had no objections,” he said.

Clips of the interview were uploaded onto Sng’s Facebook page today.

For the Chinese community, he said they should qualify for Bumiputera status as long as they are third-generation Sarawakians.

Sng pointed out that many Chinese had served, fought, sacrificed, and contributed immensely to Sarawak’s economic well-being, and are “committed to Sarawak for the long term”.

He also noted that after almost 50 years, Sarawakians of mixed marriages between Natives and non-Natives are allowed to claim Native status following the enforcement of the Interpretation (Amendment) Ordinance 2022.

Attempts to reach for comments were unsuccessful.
