KUCHING, 1 Oct: The Malaysian School of Arts Sarawak (SSeMS) made history by successfully winning the category of Malaysia Art Schools in the 2026 National Level Madani Generation Combined Jazz Orchestra Competition held from 28 to 30 September 2026 at TTI Convention Hall, Terengganu.
The three-day competition served as a platform to highlight students' talents, creativity and musical ability, particularly in orchestral instrumental playing, vocal performances and collaboration in an ensemble.
SSeMS represented 18 students and three tutors in the competition which competed for two categories, namely the Daily School Category and the Malaysian Art School Category.
For the Malaysia Art School Category, five schools participated, namely the Malaysian Art School Sarawak, the Malaysian Art School Kuala Lumpur, the Johor Malaysian Art School, the Perak Malaysian Art School and Elopura SMK, Sabah.
According to the Chief Contingent, Professor Raynold Ebony, Head of SSeMS Music Department, this participation was the first time that SSeMS participated in the competition and the main objective is to provide exposure as well as experience to students.
"Not only in this competition, SSeMS has previously often embraced international awards and recognition in various categories of competitions held at home and abroad. The achievements have made the name of schools especially and Sarawak in general unpopular with national education music", he said.
He said the performances highlighted a combination of musical instrument playing skills, vocals and conductor leadership, thus highlighting students' ability to produce a music performance collectively by displaying technical skills, creativity, discipline and teamwork.
The closing ceremony was completed by Deputy Director, Policy Sector, Planning and Coordination in Department of Sports, Kokurikulum and Arts (BSKK), Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM), Huszaidi Hussin.-TVS
