KUCHING, Aug 20: Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has called on Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco) to waive the RM57,000 upgrading charges imposed on SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor.

He said he has allocated RM400,000 to the school last year so that its hall can be fully air-conditioned.

“All upgrading works including the replacement of windows, other structural upgrading and repair works, installation of air-conditioners and overall rewiring for the hall have completed.

“The only outstanding part that is stopping the students from enjoying an air-conditioned assembly hall is now the charges imposed by Sesco to approve the upgrading from single-phase to 3-phase.

“Sesco insists that the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) pay a sum of RM57,000 for the change of single phase to 3-phase electricity supply,” he said in a statement today.

Chong further said his assistant Michael Kong has written to Sesco seeking for a waiver of the charge, but after a few months, they were informed that Sesco has rejected their appeal and insisted on the sum.

“This is a project for the comfort of our children and for their education process and Sesco should see it as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) of its company to waive the charges.

“Are the students not entitled to receive a little assistance or benefits from Sesco, which is a Sarawak government’s fully-owned company?” he questioned.

He mentioned that he will write again to Sesco next week to seek reconsideration and a waiver of the amount, with hopes that he will receive a favourable reply from Sesco. — DayakDaily
