BINTULU, 10 Oct: Mastery of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields among young generation is essential to support the aspiration of development of Bintulu as a center for industry and green energy.

Tanjong Batu Member of the National Assembly (ADUN), Johnny Pang Leong Ming said that young generation should equip themselves with knowledge and technological skills to meet industry needs, in addition to being able to generate new innovations that contribute to Sarawak's development.

According to him, the efforts to develop young talent in STEM are aligned with aspirations of Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) which emphasizes education and human capital development.

"I hope Bintulu children not only know how to use technology, but one day they will be able to create new technologies", he said during the inauguration of Putra Bakti: Mega Youth Explorer Bintulu 2026 Program at Times Square Megamall Bintulu on Saturday.

He said that the Government of Sarawak also implemented various education and talent development initiatives, including Free Higher Education Scheme starting in 2026 for eligible students and courses.

The University Putra Malaysia Sarawak (UPMS) program is focused on three main areas, namely the establishment of awareness and anti-bullying campaigns, STEM learning through practical activities and exposure to modern agriculture and environmental sustainability.

Pang said that the development of science and technology must be balanced with the formation of scholarship, discipline and mutual respect to produce a young generation that not only excels in academics but also has good moral values.

Meanwhile, he said the agriculture sector also offers opportunities in science, technology, business and innovation, especially through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), drones and biotechnology.

He said the use of modern technology has the potential to improve agricultural yields and food production efficiency, thus supporting efforts to strengthen food security in Sarawak.

He hoped that the programme would open students' minds to career opportunities in STEM and modern agriculture, as well as encourage them to explore new ideas.

He also urged UPMS students to use the experience of the program to build leadership skills, teamwork and social responsibility.

"Good leaders are not only good at giving orders, but they're also willing to go out and help the community", he said. -TVS
