STIDC drives sustainability through green initiatives

KUCHING: The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) has set its sights on becoming an environmentally conscious organisation through various initiatives.

These include tree planting activities and the development of bamboo-based industries in Sarawak.
To showcase its commitment, STIDC participated in a joint dialogue organised by The European House-Ambrosetti and Associazione Italia-Asean, together with the Malaysian Investment Development Board (MIDA) and the Italian Trade Agency (ITA).

The discussion covered several important topics, including ASEAN’s economic outlook after the pandemic, sustainable green technology, the e-economy, smart technology, value chain 4.0, aerospace safety, and investment opportunities and cooperation between Italy and ASEAN countries.

During the event, an important milestone was reached as Green Pellet (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of STIDC, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kanematsu Corporation.

Green Pellet (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd specialises in producing eco-friendly wood pellets from wood residue and sustainably sourced wood from planted forests. These wood pellets serve as an industrial fuel and contribute to STIDC’s green initiatives, in line with its slogan “Driving Sustainability.” The primary markets for these products are Korea and Japan.

STIDC is also actively promoting the use of engineered wood for housing and building construction components in Sarawak. This initiative supports the state government’s drive for green development, environmental sustainability and carbon storage.

In recognition of its efforts, STIDC was honoured with the prestigious BrandLaureate Best Brand Award in the Nation Pride category for Sustainable Forest Management. This award reflects STIDC’s commitment to promoting the circular economy and green technology.

Furthermore, STIDC and its subsidiaries and associated companies utilise factory and forest waste to produce high-value-added products such as fibreboards, wood pellets and wood chips. This commitment is encapsulated in STIDC’s tagline, “Nothing Goes to Waste.”

In addition to these endeavours, STIDC is leading the way in utilising matured rubber trees and bamboo as alternative sources of raw materials, reducing reliance on timber from natural forests.

Meanwhile, STIDC also took part in the 12th World Bamboo Congress in Taiwan, enriching its knowledge and networking with successful bamboo industry players from 20 countries to exchange experiences.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who also serves as STIDC’s Board of Management chairman, led a delegation to Stockholm, Sweden, to promote Sarawak as an investment destination and explore collaboration opportunities in forest management, plantation and timber processing technology.

STIDC demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship through innovative green technologies and strategic initiatives. By engaging in forest plantation, developing bamboo-based industries, and promoting sustainable practices such as eco-friendly timber products, STIDC continues to support the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and uphold Sarawak’s vision outlined in the Post-COVID Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS2030) to ensure the state remains environmentally friendly.
