KUCHING: A proposal to build a Short Take-Off and Landing Airport (STOLport) at Apau Koden to serve 27 rural villages will be reviewed by the Ministry of Transport Sarawak.

Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the proposed facility would improve air connectivity for Kenyah and Penan communities in the Kedaya Telang Usan area.

“The ministry would look into the proposal, including assessing local air transport needs and the feasibility of constructing the STOLport,” he said during a courtesy call by representatives of the Kedaya Telang Usan Development Committee today.

The committee proposed constructing a STOLport with an 800-metre runway to improve accessibility and ease travel for residents in the remote area.

The proposed facility is also aimed at supporting agricultural activities, tourism and socio-economic development in the surrounding villages.

During the meeting, Lee acknowledged the importance of improving air connectivity for rural communities, particularly those facing transport challenges due to their remote locations.

He assured the representatives that the ministry would follow up on their application through its relevant divisions.

The proposal will be subject to further assessment to determine its feasibility and suitability for the communities concerned.
