KUCHING, 11 Oct: Promoting community fitness programs such as Exercise Cergas 1Kenyalang 2026 is important in promoting healthy lifestyle practices, strengthening community relations and building active and prosperous communities.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department of Sarawak (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agency, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi said that state development is not only measured on the basis of economic growth, infrastructure and investment but also depends on the level of health, happiness and well-being of the people.
He believes that societies who are physically and mentally healthy are more prepared to contribute to their families, workplaces and communities.
"I encourage communities to make physical activity a part of their daily routine in order to improve health and quality of life", she said.
He said this during the inaugural 1Kenyalang 2026 Cergas Exercise held in conjunction with DBKU Car Free Morning and What About Kuching (WAK) Festival 2026 here, today.
I'm going to see Dr. Abdul Rahman explained that the programme which combines aerobic, aerodance and zumba activities gives opportunities to communities of all ages and fitness levels to exercise together.
He said that the activities were not only fun, but they also strengthened family ties, friendships and social interactions among communities.
"The DBKU Car Free Morning initiative is an effort to promote more sustainable urban life by opening up public spaces for recreational activities, exercise, walking and cycling", he said.
He said the efforts were in line with aspirations to make Kuching a cleaner, greener, healthier and more livable city.
In addition, the program's participation in WAK Festival 2026 also shows how fitness activities, environmental awareness, arts and culture can be combined to streamline urban life as well as increase community participation.
"Activities like this are able to strengthen unity because they open up space for communities from different backgrounds to come together and do activities together", he explained.
He hopes that the 1Kenyalang Cergas Exercise can be a catalyst for further promotion of regular community fitness activities in Kuching and other cities in Sarawak.-TVS
