KUCHING, Feb 19: Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang said Sarawak is set to enjoy greater prosperity as the Malaysian ringgit strengthens, positioning the State to become one of the richest in the region.

He noted that Malaysia’s food imports have reportedly hit RM80 billion, highlighting the country’s heavy reliance on foreign sources and exposure to price fluctuations.

“The stronger ringgit means we can import more for the same amount of ringgit we pay.

“Thus, Sarawak is poised to become one of the richest in the region with good leadership from our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” he told reporters during a Chinese New Year open house at his residence in Kuching yesterday (Feb 18).

Lo also highlighted that in 2026, Sarawak’s youth will benefit from the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), which will help nurture the engineers, doctors, scientists and professionals needed to secure the State’s future.

“Education used to be a heavy burden for many families, but now, our children—irrespective of race or religion—can pursue higher learning without financial worry,” he added.

He further urged Sarawakians to continue working hard and stressed the importance of developing local talent to drive the State forward.

“When Sarawak prospers, Malaysia prospers. We are a guiding force for the nation,” he stressed.
