KUCHING, Aug 21: Pétanque duo Akhtar Shauqi Aini Mohd Dom and Nur Durratul Sahira Yazit delivered a gold medal for Sarawak at the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma) yesterday.
The duo collected a total score of 13 in the mixed double event held at Petanque Arena in Santubong here.
The silver medal went to Perak’s Mohamad Yusman Haizad Mohamad Yusof and Nur Zafirah Zafri, while the bronze was secured by Selangor’s Muhammad Arif Irfan Zainudin and Nur Alya Farzana Rushazlir Effendy.
Sarawak also collected one silver medal yesterday in the women’s double event, contributed by duo Ain Afzan Aisyah Ezlan and Sharifah Daniamalyana Wan Deros.
The latest additions brought Sarawak’s total medal count in pétanque to four gold and two silver.
Pétanque, a target sport where participants throw metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet or jack, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground, offers a total of 13 gold medals in Sukma 2024.
The sport will commence until Saturday (Aug 24) with six more events to be contested, namely men’s triple, women’s triple, mixed triple (two men and one woman), mixed triple (two women and one man), men’s team and women’s team. — DayakDaily
