BINTULU, Aug 20: Sarawak finished first in the medal tally for muaythai with five gold, four silver, and one bronze — totalling 10 medals in the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma 2024).
In the finals today, five Sarawak muaythai fighters added more medals to Sarawak’s tally with their impressive victories in their respective categories during the finals held at the Naim Paragon Streetmall.
In the men’s 51-54kg category, Muhammad Mikail Ghazali Zulfikar bested Melaka’s Muhammad Zulfakar Othman to secure the gold medal with a score of 14-24.
Texas Jeremy Lo, who competed against Penang’s Muhamad Hakimi Nordin in the men’s 54-57kg category, added another gold medal to Sarawak’s tally with a score of 29-23.
As for the men’s 67-71kg category, Azhad Haziq Syafaat faced off against Sabah’s Hellmi Samsir but didn’t manage to bring home the gold, losing 26-15 and went home with the silver medal instead.
Fellow Sarawakian Maurien Hii Sie Lin also performed well in the women’s 48-51kg category as she beat Nur Faqina Dullia Adrea Zaratul Ihram from Kelantan with a score of 17-4 to bag the gold.
Cherilynn Christalle Chan Qi Qi, while not able to secure the gold for Sarawak, fought valiantly and won the silver medal for Sarawak, losing to Perak’s Nur Bisyarah Altisya Mohd Zairee in the gold medal match by 10-24 in the women’s 51-54kg category.
Yesterday (Aug 19), five Sarawak muaythai fighters secured two gold and two silver medals in men’s wai khru (gold), men’s mai muaythai (gold), women’s wai khru (silver), and women’s mai muaythai (silver); whereas on Sunday (Aug 18) Sarawak secured bronze in the men’s 60-63.5kg category.
With Sarawak finishing in first place, Sabah came in close second also with ten medals of which five are gold, but with three silver and two bronze; while Perak came in third with six medals (four gold, one silver, one bronze). — DayakDaily
