ALOR SETAR (Aug 7): The Kedah government will offer rewards of up to RM4,000 to state athletes who win gold medals at the 2024 Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) to be held from Aug 17 to 24.

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said silver medallists would receive up to RM2,500, while bronze medallists up to RM1,300.

He said the financial incentives included on-the-spot rewards for medal winners at the Games, with the amount varying depending on the number of athletes in the sports event.

“The incentives are aimed at encouraging athletes to fight hard…we have allocated funds for the rewards.

“We have a target of 23 gold, 24 silver and 25 bronze medals. There are many sports, no need to mention the sports we are targeting medals for,” he said at a press conference at the flag handing over ceremony to the Kedah contingent here today.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Sanusi said the state government would reward national men’s singles badminton player Lee Zii Jia who won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games last Monday.

He said the details of the reward would be finalised after the Alor Setar-born athlete returned to his hometown.

“There is a reward, we will announce it when he returns (to Kedah). I have talked to two or three people. See what he wants? Usually we give cash rewards, that’s normal,” he said. – Bernama
