Sukma XXI: Rain, thunderstorms forecast for most of nine divisions in Sarawak until Saturday

KUCHING (Aug 21): The Meteorological Department of Malaysia (MetMalaysia) has predicted either rain or thunderstorms for most of the nine divisions in Sarawak where the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) are taking place until Saturday (Aug 24).

According to a special weather forecast for Sukma XXI, MetMalaysia Kuching branch said all the nine divisions – Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri – will experience rain or thunderstorms throughout the day and night today.

“Only Miri is expected to see a sunny morning on Aug 21,” added the department.

For tomorrow (Aug 22), MetMalaysia said all the nine divisions except Bintulu and Miri will have a rainy morning followed by a thunderstormy afternoon.

“While Kuching, Samarahan and Serian are to continue experiencing thunderstorms at night, Sri Aman, Betong, Mukah and Sibu will see rain, and Bintulu and Miri will have a dry night,” it added.

On Aug 23, MetMalaysia said all divisions except Bintulu and Miri will continue to expect rain in the morning.

“Kuching, Samarahan and Serian will remain rainy in the afternoon, while thunderstorms are expected in other divisions. Only Bintulu and Miri will experience rainy weather at night.”

On the last day of Sukma XXI (Aug 24), MetMalaysia said all nine divisions will have a thunderstormy afternoon.

“Serian, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri will have sunny mornings, while Kuching, Samarahan, Betong and Mukah will expect rain.

“Rain is expected in all nine divisions except Mukah, Sibu, and Bintulu on the night of Aug 24.”

Separately, MetMalaysia said thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds are predicted to hit some areas in Sarawak, Sabah, and Johor until noon today.

In an alert issued at 9am today, it said Kuching, Serian, and Samarahan in Sarawak are expected to experience these adverse weather conditions.

MetMalaysia added that similar weather is also forecast for Tawau, Kunak, and Semporna in Sabah, as well as Mersing in Johor.
