Sukma XXI: Sarawak crashes out in fencing events

MIRI (Aug 20): Sarawak returned empty handed in the Women Individual Foil and Men Saber fencing events, crashing out in the quarter-finals this morning.

Juliet Judy Bangai was eliminated in the quarter finals this morning in her match against Nur Aliah Zulfah of Negri Sembilan who won 15-11.

Juliet beat Sonia Ling 15-2 in the preliminary round to book her quarter-final berth.

Surayya Rizzal of Penang won the Women Foil’s gold after beating Philippa Jean Ong Ziyi in the final while Nur Aliah won the bronze.

In the Men Foil competition, Sarawak’s Amil Nemuel Ferrer Kala lost 7-15 to Teh Xi Hao of Johor in the quarter finals.

Teh went on to win gold, beating Tony Lee in the finals while Qhaleef Bustaman Mohamad Bustaman took home the bronze.

There are 12 fencing events in Sukma XXI where the competition is held at Eastwood Golf and Country Club in Miri.

Sarawak fencing team grabbed a Silver in the Women Individual Epee event yesterday, with 13 year-old Sara Sofea Indongesit providing the cheer to Sarawak.

The Sarawak team is hoping to add more medals tomorrow in the Men’s Epee and Women’s Saber events.
