KUCHING (Aug 16): The Ministry of Transport (MoT) Sarawak has developed comprehensive transportation plans for the 21st Malaysian Games (Sukma), which begin officially tomorrow.

The ministry is serving as the national biennial games Transport Working Committee for the event, which will be held in nine divisions across Sarawak and feature 37 sports and 488 events, attracting approximately 16,000 athletes and officials.

“We are committed to demonstrating Sarawak’s logistical capabilities in hosting such a significant national event while also promoting the diverse cultural heritage of the region.

“To accommodate the logistical demands of Sukma XXI, the ministry has mobilised an extensive network of transportation resources,” said MoT Sarawak officer Syahrizzal Arfandy Adam.

He said the transportation plan has been developed in collaboration with the Road Transport Department; Sarawak Rivers Board; police; Customs Department; Immigration Department; Public Works Department; People’s Volunteer Corps; Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts; Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board; and relevant Resident’s Offices.

This includes a well-coordinated fleet comprising buses, vans, lorries, and saloon cars dedicated to ensuring smooth and efficient transport for all participants from their points of arrival in Sarawak to the various competition venues and accommodation.

“The geographical spread of the event across nine divisions presents unique challenges, notably the transportation of athletes and officials from the central hub at Kuching International Airport to distant divisions such as Lundu.

“The committee has meticulously planned these operations to handle the complexities of such a wide distribution,” he explained.

Recognising the early start times required by the event schedule, the operations teams are prepared to begin their day at 4am, ensuring that all transportation services are operational and ready to meet the day’s demands, he said.

To better navigate the varied terrains and infrastructure across the divisions, smaller vans have been selected over larger buses in specific regions to enhance mobility and adaptability.

“We provide more than 200 buses, more than 300 vans, and cars to cater all Sukma contingents.

“In orchestrating the transportation for Sukma XXI, MoT Sarawak is not only focused on logistical efficiency but also on promoting Sarawak as a vibrant destination for culture and tourism.

“This prestigious event offers an exceptional opportunity to showcase Sarawak’s hospitality, its unique traditions, and natural beauty, enhancing its appeal to both national visitors and potential international tourists,” added Syahrizzal.

Held biennially, Sukma is a cornerstone in developing young Malaysian sporting talents, offering a platform for competition in a wide range of sports.

It aims to foster sportsmanship and cultural exchange among the youth of various states, reinforcing national unity and community spirit.
