SIBU, June 28: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Dudong Branch chairman Wong Ching Yong has dismissed Democratic Action Party (DAP) deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming’s latest pledge to resign as a minister as “just another bold declaration”, questioning the credibility of what he described as the minister’s repeated political ultimatums.
Wong was responding to Nga’s recent remarks that he would be the first minister to resign if a landslide victory for United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in the upcoming Johor state election resulted in former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak being released early. Nga had also said the DAP would not rule out withdrawing from the Unity Government under such circumstances.
In a press statement today, Wong said Nga had built a reputation for making sweeping political declarations that ultimately failed to materialise.
“Nga Kor Ming may well be the minister who churns out the most ‘bold declarations’ in the DAP. Unfortunately, many of these statements end up as nothing more than empty boasts for show,” he said.
According to Wong, the public only needed to look at two examples to assess the credibility of such statements.
The first, he said, was Nga’s past remark suggesting that Malaysia’s economy could be strengthened to the point where Singaporeans would seek employment in Malaysia, a claim which he said did not reflect the current economic reality.
The second, he added, was Nga’s reported 2020 statement that the DAP would not hesitate to leave the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition if the federal government failed to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).
Wong noted that PH had since governed the country, lost power, and now leads the current Unity Government, yet the UEC remains unrecognised while the DAP continues to be part of the ruling coalition.
On the Johor state election, Wong, who is also the Assistant Information and Publicity Secretary of the SUPP Central Committee, said the DAP’s continued emphasis on Najib suggested the party was attempting to revive an issue that had already run its political course.
He acknowledged that Najib’s prosecution had been a significant issue that contributed to Pakatan Harapan’s past electoral success, but said repeatedly highlighting it during the Johor campaign could be seen as an attempt to recycle familiar political narratives for electoral advantage.
Wong added that this was not the first time opposition and government politicians had relied on what he described as “bold declarations” to gain political traction, citing previous campaign promises such as immediate fuel price reductions and the recognition of the UEC upon taking office. However, he said the public had already seen how such commitments had played out in practice.
Wong said instead of relying on resignation pledges to deflect from governance performance, or repeatedly revisiting the Najib issue in political campaigning, Nga and the DAP should focus on convincing the public through tangible administrative achievements.
He stressed that political credibility ultimately depended on delivery rather than rhetoric, adding that election promises should be fulfilled progressively rather than being contradicted after taking office. — DayakDaily
