KUCHING (April 25): The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has paid tribute to the late Datin Patinggi Puan Sri Dr Yong Sau Kan, describing her as a principled and loyal member who dedicated her life to the party.

The SUPP Batu Kawa branch said her passing has left the party deeply saddened, noting that she was a respected figure known for her strong will and unwavering commitment.

“She turned 100 just last January. We are deeply saddened and heartbroken over the tragic news of her passing this morning,” the branch said in a Facebook post.

Yong passed away at her residence here this morning, at the age of 100, leaving behind three children — Dr Wong Chee Liang, Dr Wong Chee May and Wong Chee Ling — and grandchildren.

The branch said her loyalty to SUPP would be remembered, recalling her role in assisting the party in a legal effort to reclaim three shoplots in Sibu, which were ruled to belong to the party.

It said she personally testified in court multiple times despite her age, showing ‘unwavering resolve’ in fulfilling her responsibilities.

SUPP Batu Kawa also noted that she had been nominated for the ‘SUPP Sa’ati Lifetime Loyalty and Dedication Award’ but had declined, later agreeing to accept it on behalf of her late husband, former SUPP president and deputy chief minister the late Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai.

The branch described her humility and refusal of personal recognition as admirable, adding that her contributions would be long remembered.

Those wishing to pay their last respects may do so at her residence at No. 8, Lorong 2, off Jalan Tabuan here, on April 26.

A wake will be held on Monday at 7pm, followed by uncoffining on Tuesday at 7.30am and a memorial service before the cortege proceeds to Nirvana Memorial Park near here for cremation.
