MIRI (Dec 9): An Indonesian man drowned in a river near the Ladang Surai at Jalan Beluru-Long Teru near here on Tuesday.

In a statement, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak operations centre said the man had been identified as ‘Aidil’, aged 20.

“We received a distress call at 3.10pm.

“According to some witnesses, there were several people who went swimming in the river, when two of them were suddenly swept away by the strong currents.

“One of them was located before the rescue personnel arrived, but he was already unresponsive,” said Bomba, adding that that body was later handed over to Bekenu police for further action.

Adding on, it said the other man, identified as ‘Irfan’, aged 18, had yet to be found as at press time.
