KUCHING: Young entrepreneurs in Sarawak stand to benefit from greater access to business networks, mentorship, government assistance and financing opportunities through the Sarawak Youth Startup (SYStartup) programme.

Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the initiative provided a platform for aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs to connect, exchange knowledge and explore available support to establish and expand their businesses.

He said the programme, now entering its third cohort, was also aimed at building a comprehensive network and database of young entrepreneurs to help the ministry and relevant agencies better identify their needs and provide targeted assistance.

Speaking at the launch of SYStartup’s third cohort at its hub in Jalan Kulas here yesterday (Oct 15), Abdul Karim acknowledged the challenges of entrepreneurship, stressing that success required perseverance, patience and determination.

“As you all know, it is never easy to be a businessman or an entrepreneur. It is even more difficult to become a successful businessman. But that does not mean success is beyond your reach,” he said.

He stressed that young entrepreneurs needed more than basic business knowledge, highlighting the importance of mentorship, financial guidance and exposure to experienced business owners.

Through the SYStartup hub, participants can engage with entrepreneurs from previous cohorts, share experiences and obtain information on government assistance and financing facilities.

Abdul Karim also underscored the need to create fairer business opportunities for local entrepreneurs, particularly in food and cultural festivals, where competition from established operators could limit their participation.

He said the government had a responsibility to ensure emerging entrepreneurs were not sidelined and were given opportunities to compete and grow.

“The government wants to help the young entrepreneurs and they will stand by you. I will never allow our own people to be left behind,” he said.

He added that continued collaboration among the ministry, programme organisers, government agencies and financial institutions would be crucial in helping young entrepreneurs strengthen their competitiveness and achieve long-term business sustainability.

Through networking, mentorship and improved access to business resources, SYStartup aims to equip participants with the knowledge, connections and support needed to transform their business ideas into viable and sustainable enterprises.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, ministry permanent secretary Datu Dzulkornain Masron and ministry division head Seroji Ludin.
