The PN leader also says opponents are challenging Malay rights by likening it to apartheid.

Perikatan Nasional’s Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said Malay MPs in the opposition would back a bill to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure only Malays can become prime minister.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional’s Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal today doubled down on his push to limit the office of prime minister to only Malays, daring his critics to go to court over the issue.

He said those who continued to term the call to restrict the prime ministership to Malays as being “apartheid-like” were in essence challenging Malay rights under the Federal Constitution.

Wan Fayhsal had recently asked the prime minister to pass a bill to amend the constitution to reflect this, claiming he and other Malay MPs in the opposition would back it.

“We must remember that Malays choose leaders not only based on worldly or secular political grounds, but also based on their ability to lead in matters of their faith.

“I dare them (the critics) to take this issue to the courts as most states require a Malay Muslim to be menteri besar,” he said in a video posted on Facebook.

Earlier, Wan Fayhsal gave a statement to the police after Sarawak DAP lodged a report.

The complainants claimed that his remarks were “incendiary” and discriminatory towards the Sabah and Sarawak communities.

Separately, Wan Fayhsal reiterated that his amendment proposal was to ensure the supremacy of Malay leadership was safeguarded by the present government.

He said it appeared like some people were trying to incite others by hurling unfounded accusations at him and Bersatu.

Wan Fayhsal’s lawyer Siddiq Azani said his client had the right to free speech and his own views on the constitution. He said the public should not waste the police’s time by lodging reports on such matters.

“Such reports do not add value to society,” he said.
