MUKAH, Oct 4: The Sarawak government is identifying potential areas to expand perennial rice cultivation in the Mukah Division, including Tanjung Manis, Daro, Mukah, and Balingian, to increase rice production in the region.

In a TVS news report, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration, and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the effort was in line with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s emphasis on the potential of perennial rice, which can be harvested multiple times from a single planting.

“Perennial rice is an annual crop that is planted once but can be harvested two, three, four or even five times. We have identified areas in Tanjung Manis, Daro, Mukah, and Balingian that have the potential for further expansion of this crop,” he said when met during the Senamrobik and 3km Fun Walk Costume flag-off programme held in conjunction with the Jelajah Sarawakku Sayang 2026 Mukah Division at Dataran Pehin Setia Raja today.

Len Talif said one factor to consider was the suitability of perennial rice varieties to the soil and environmental conditions in the identified areas before expanding cultivation.

He added that the Kedang Paloh area also had a history of rice production, providing an opportunity to assess its potential for perennial rice cultivation in Mukah Division.

The initiative could be one approach to strengthen the agricultural sector in Mukah Division, subject to the suitability of the rice varieties, soil conditions, and the findings of assessments on perennial rice cultivation. — DayakDaily
