Tennis: Women’s doubles beat Johor for spot in semifinals

KUCHING: The Sarawak women’s doubles tennis team advanced to the semifinals after defeating Johor 2-0 in the quarterfinals at the 21st Malaysia Games (SUKMA) yesterday (Aug 20). 

The formidable pair of Soo Hui Yii and Lydia Liong beat Kok Mun Yi and Siti Elmiza Hazli 6-0, 6-0. 

Earlier, in Round of 16, Soo and Liong secured their place in the quarterfinals by defeating Kelantan’s Nur Aedlin Hanim Nazri and Putri Qharieysa Wahyuni.

In the men’s doubles Round of 16, Sarawak’s Matthew Goh and Hii Shieng Wee earned a spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Federal Territories’ Aqil Adibi Rahman and Nicholas Kong 2-0.

They are set to face Selangor’s Devash Sarawanan and Syed Uzair Sufi Syed Ibrahim in the quarterfinals.

However, in the Round of 16, Sarawak’s Ayden Shah Deen Heshaam and Raidon Tan were unable to advance to the quarterfinals after losing 0-2 to Perak’s Muhammad Farreez Isqandar Abdul Rais and Pavel Liam Thadani.

In the men’s singles Round of 16, Sarawak’s Cornelius Sia was defeated by Penang’s Muhammad Adeeb Muhammad Azhari 0-2, while Sarawak’s Chong Zhi Hao also fell to Perak’s Daniel Leong, with the same 0-2 result.

In the mixed doubles, Sarawak’s Goh and Soo, along with Hii and Liong, both made it to the quarterfinals.

The matches held on Tuesday (Aug 20) afternoon at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) court were slightly delayed due to heavy rain and will continue today (Aug 21).
