MUKAH, 4 Oct: Sarawak government is identifying potential areas to expand rice cultivationperennialin the Mukah Division including the Sweet, Daro, Mukah and Balingian Cape to increase rice production in the region.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land and Natural Resources Administration, Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the effort was in line with the emphasis put by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinji Tan Sri Johari Tun Openg on rice's potentialperennialThat can be harvested multiple times from a single planting.
According to him, the Mukah Division has potential to be developed as a rice production area based on the history of rice farming in the region.
"PastorperennialIt's an annual rice, where the crop is made once but it can be harvested two, three, four or five times.
"We have identified areas in Tanjung Manis, Daro, Mukah and Balingian with potential for further expansion of the plant", he said.

Len Talif explains that among the things to be considered is the compatibility of rice varietiesperennialwith soil conditions and environments in areas identified prior to extensive planting.
