ADVERTISE HERE
KUCHING, 15 Oct: The new building of the Sarawak Dyslexia Society (DASwk) is expected to strengthen intervention and support efforts for children with dyslexia and learning difficulties in Sarawak.
Sarawak's Minister of Women, Children and Community Welfare Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said that the building completed this year started to be used by the association in September last year thanks to a grant from the Government of Sarawak.
He said the facilities should be fully utilised, including housing components that allow children from rural areas to attend intervention classes.
"Thank God, we have a very good team to take advantage of government grants and now the building is finally finished.
"We need to make full use of these housing-equipped buildings to make it easier for people from rural areas to come and attend intervention classes", he said.
He said this during his address at the Sarawak International Dislexia and Learning Disabilities Conference (SIDLDC) 2026 here today.
Fatimah said the building reflects the state government's concern for the needs of children, especially those with dyslexia.
In related developments, he said the Early Stop Intervention Centre (OSEIC) established in 2020 also plays an important role in helping children who need developmental and learning support.
As of June 30, a total of 3,051 children received assistance through OSEIC, with 518 of them completing the intervention program.
Out of these, 145 children attend primary education, while 303 are placed in the Integrated Special Education Program (PPKI) and 70 more are enrolled in National Schools of Special Education (SKPK).
He said the achievement demonstrates the importance of early intervention and appropriate support to help children develop their potential.
He also encouraged cooperation between OSEIC, DASwk and Sarawak State Department of Education to strengthen early detection, interventions and continuity of education support to children.
"Every child has the potential to develop if given the right attention, guidance and intervention at the right time", she says. - TVS
