MIRI, 4 Oct: The natural heritage hobby continues to be revived as a space for younger generations to interact face-to-face, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.

Obviously, hobby-based activities can encourage young people to reduce their dependence on mobile phones and interact directly through shared interests.

"When we have hobbies, we communicate and interact face-to-face. We can talk about birds, their care and kind, not just communicate over the phone.

"Through hobbies like this, we get to know each other, build friendships and strengthen community ties", he said while speaking at the Open Melastic Competition and the Voice Art and Bird Style Competition, Sri Lee Kim Shin Dato Cup 2026 in Miri, today.

According to him, heritage hobbies also give young people an opportunity to get acquainted with traditional activities that were once part of the life of previous societies.

The effort to revive the hobby is essential so that it remains a legacy and not lost in the swallowing of current technological changes and lifestyles.

"While we live in an age of advanced technology, hobbies and sports heritage must continue to be preserved. If we work hard, we can advance it and attract more young people to join us", he added.

He also appreciated the participation of participants from across Sarawak including Lawas, Miri, Bintulu, Mukah, Sri Aman, Kuching and Asajaya, as well as hobby enthusiasts from Brunei Darussalam.

According to him, participation from north to south of Sarawak and Brunei shows that the competition has attracted interest among heritage hobby enthusiasts.

"I hope that such encouragement can continue as a vehicle for strengthening community relations, in addition to introducing heritage hobbies to the new generation", he said. - TVS
