MUKAH, 4 Oct: Sarawak Government pays half the cost of installing solar panels to help homeowners in Tanjung Manis enjoy the benefits of renewable energy without burdening the high installation costs.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land and Natural Resources Administration, Datuk Len Talif Salleh said more than 20 houses are planned to be built in Tanjung Manis, with over half of them equipped with solar panel systems.
According to him, the installation cost of RM30,000 was previously among the constraints for homeowners, but the Sarawak Government's joint financing approach allowed them to bear only RM15,000.
"If possible, all of these houses are supplied with solar panels because we have already seen the benefits in the building area, when homeowners can resell excess electricity to the grid system", he said.
He said so when he was met after attending the Gymnastics and 3KM DUN Walk Costume Program at Pehin Setya Raja Square, here.
Len Talif explained that the implementation of the system not only has the potential to reduce energy costs, but also opens up opportunities for homeowners to utilize the surplus electricity generated.
In the meantime, he said, proposals were also made so that cooperation with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) can help provide upfront payment of RM10,000 to eligible home buyers.
He said that the aid could be used to pay a portion of the related costs, thereby reducing the financial burden on the homeowner.
He also explained that based on the estimates submitted, fees related to homes and solar panel systems are targeted not to exceed RM20 per month for long term payment period between 20 to 30 years.
However, he said that details of financing schemes and payment methods still need to be detailed to ensure the homeowner understands the real financial commitment.
The initiative reflects the efforts of the Government of Sarawak to expand the use of renewable energy in housing development, as well as enhance homeowners' ability to enjoy more sustainable energy facilities.-TVS
