KUCHING (April 7): Sarawak will host the Teresa Teng 31st Anniversary Memorial Tribute Concert this July, an event expected to draw regional visitors and strengthen the state’s position as a cultural and tourism hub.
The concert, titled Tian Mimi (Sweet on You), is scheduled for July 24 and 25 at 7.30pm at the Pullman Hotel, featuring internationally acclaimed performers Hu Die and Wang Tianyi.
Organised by Evac Holdings Group Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary Luxe Event Management and Entertainment (Luxe Entertainment), the event is supported by the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, the Sarawak Tourism Board, and the Teresa Teng Foundation.
State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the tribute is expected to attract audiences from both within Malaysia and abroad.
“With proper promotion, it should be a sell-out.
“I believe many will travel from West Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Sabah to Kuching,” he told a press conference at the Sarawak Club here.
Also present were the ministry’s deputy ministers, Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Datuk Sebastian Ting.
Abdul Karim described Teng as one of Asia’s most influential singers, whose music continues to resonate across generations.
“Her songs were recorded in multiple languages and remain timeless. This tribute will bring many back to those memories,” he said.
Evac Holdings executive director Michael Liong said the successful bid to host the concert followed an invitation to a showcase at Shanghai’s Majestic Theatre in October 2024, which inspired efforts to bring the tribute to Sarawak.
“With the ministry’s support, we are able to deliver an international production and showcase Sarawak’s capability as a cultural destination,” he said.
He added that the initiative also led to the establishment of Luxe Entertainment to attract more international and local events while contributing to economic growth and job creation.
In addition to the concert, a Teresa Teng Classic Hits Singing Competition will be held, with auditions in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Bintulu before a grand finale in Kuching.
A Bistro Tour featuring live performances of Teng’s songs at selected venues is also planned.
