SIBU (March 28): More innovative cultural events should be organised to showcase Malaysia’s unique diversity, helping to boost tourism and stimulate local economic growth, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Dato Sri Tiong King Sing.
He said such events not only nurture young talents and support entrepreneurship, but also strengthen community bonds and create a more vibrant local environment.
“Such a combination highlights the depth of cultural values and reinforces the importance of family, heritage and moving forward with hope,” he said in a speech read by Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Joshua Ting at HapiLand Qingming opening cum Easter Celebration at Sibu Gateway on Friday.
The event, organised by Persatuan Perpaduan Sungai Merah Sibu, attracted strong participation from the local community as well as visitors returning to their hometown for the Qingming Festival.
Tiong noted that the Qingming Festival and Easter coincidentally fall on the same day this year, creating a rare cultural intersection that symbolises both remembrance of the past and hope for renewal.
He praised the organisers for successfully integrating elements from different cultural and religious backgrounds, describing it as a reflection of Malaysia’s strong spirit of multicultural harmony and mutual respect.
He added that initiatives such as HapiLand play an important role in creating opportunities for youth engagement, strengthening social connections and enhancing the overall vibrancy of Sibu.
“More community-driven programmes that promote unity and cultural appreciation are always encouraged,” he said.
The 10-day event features a variety of programmes, including live music performances, short drama presentations and band showcases.
A community marketplace has also been set up, providing young entrepreneurs with a platform to promote their creativity and products while encouraging interaction within the community.
Tiong said the event was also aimed at welcoming hometown visitors returning for Qingming while offering a warm platform for families and friends to reconnect.
“The inclusion of performances and a creative marketplace aims to support young entrepreneurs and inspire more youths to participate in community and business activities.
“Such a combination highlights the depth of cultural values and reinforces the importance of family, heritage, and moving forward with hope,” he said.
