SIBU: A lorry driver was fined by the traffic police after he was caught on camera for overtaking on double lines along Jalan Alan last Sunday (Jan 14).
The incident gained attention when a dashcam footage, depicting the commercial vehicle attempting the manoeuvre, went viral on Facebook.
According to the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, the post attracted negative comments, condemning the driver’s actions that could potentially jeopardise the safety of other road users.
Following that, the Sibu traffic police identified the driver and summoned him to assist in the investigation.
Today (Jan 17), the driver willingly appeared at the traffic police office for questioning and he admitted to the wrongdoing of overtaking on double lines, which is an offence under Rule 13(1) of the Traffic Rules 166/59.
In a separate incident in Betong, a Proton Iswara was caught on camera executing an illegal U-turn at a P-turn along Jalan Betong-Sarikei on Friday (Jan 12).
After the incident came to the police’s attention, Betong traffic police identified the driver and requested his cooperation in the investigation.
On Monday (Jan 16), the driver voluntarily appeared at the traffic police office, confessing to the offence of making an illegal U-turn.
He was issued a fine under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for disregarding traffic sign instructions.
