KUCHING, July 1: Two men were each sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment and six strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to an armed gang robbery that left a 70-year-old man robbed of cash and valuables at his home in Sadong Jaya last month.
The 35-year-old and 29-year-old accused entered a guilty plea before Judge Shafiza Datu Abdul Razak Tready.
The court heard that the duo committed the offence with another accomplice who remains at large.
They were charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397, for the robbery that took place at a house in Kampung Semera Ulu at about 9.30pm on June 21.
Based on the facts of the case, the victim was watching television when three masked men armed with machetes forced their way into the house after kicking open the front door.
The intruders ransacked the premises before fleeing with RM3,000 in cash, a mobile phone, an identity card, a birth certificate, three machetes, a grass-cutting machine and a fishing net. The total losses were estimated at RM3,650.
Following a police report lodged by the victim, officers arrested the two accused separately on June 23 and June 26 in Kampung Semera Tengah.
Police investigations later led to the recovery of several stolen items, including the fishing net and grass-cutting machine, which had been hidden in a nearby forest. The victim later identified the recovered property as his.
Initial urine screening also found both accused tested positive for drugs.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Fadzri Azham Zainudin appeared for the prosecution, while both accused were unrepresented. — DayakDaily
