KUCHING (March 12): The construction of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching 2 (BCCK 2) is progressing ahead of schedule and is expected to further strengthen Sarawak’s standing as a premier destination for conventions and international events.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said he was satisfied with the progress of the project following a working visit to the construction site here yesterday.
“The contractor’s presentation demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing their capacity, with current construction progress indicating that the project is ahead of schedule and may be completed earlier than the due date.
“We are happy with their progress,” he said.
Due for completion by March 2028, BCCK 2 is expected to accommodate up to 9,500 delegates, which will significantly expand Sarawak’s capacity to host large-scale conferences, exhibitions, and international gatherings.
During the visit, Uggah, who is also Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, chaired a meeting where the contractor provided a briefing on the procurement plan and the sourcing of materials, some of which are from countries such as China.
This was in view of the potential impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict and broader geopolitical uncertainties.
The briefing was held to ensure that such external factors will not affect the project’s progress or timeline.
The BCCK 2 project will complement the existing facilities at BCCK, further supporting the state’s growing business events industry.
Also present during the working visit were Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister (Infrastructure Development) Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak permanent secretary Datu Chiew Chee Yau, Sarawak Public Works Department deputy director (Technical Services) Meehan Jorai, and Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad head of Property Development Strategic Business Unit Shaun Mok Chek Wei.
