UKAS to organise media workshops ahead of Sarawak election

KUCHING: The Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) will organise workshops and engagement sessions with media practitioners in Sarawak to facilitate the dissemination of accurate information related to preparations for election coverage.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, said the programme would involve all media organisations, including Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), the Information Department and other media agencies.

He said the workshop aimed to assist journalists in obtaining the basic information needed to produce reports on election and pre-election matters.

“We understand that Sarawak is vast, and we understand the challenges faced by some journalists in reaching locations and obtaining information about candidates, the size of State constituencies, polling district centres, the number of voters, population, ethnic groups and so on,” he told a press conference after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Satria Pertiwi Complex today.

Abdullah added that the workshops would be conducted by zones, beginning with the Southern Zone, followed by the Central Zone and Northern Zone, to enable media practitioners to obtain the necessary information.

He said preparations with the media would be carried out in advance although the date for the State election had yet to be announced.

According to him, the immediate focus was on the final sitting of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) for the current term.

He added that the announcement currently being awaited was the tabling of Sarawak’s 2027 Budget by the Premier.
