‘Under Sarawak Skies’ brings 100 artworks under one roof

KUCHING: La Promenade Mall’s Hoan Gallery will launch its “Under Sarawak Skies” exhibition on Sept 16, featuring over 100 artworks by more than 30 regional and local artists.

The showcase, which runs until Nov 8, marks the culmination of the Sarawak Art Expedition & Field Trip Programme that brought creators from Singapore, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak to interpret the state’s rich landscapes, traditions and culture.

Supported by the Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry, the event stands as one of the gallery’s most ambitious projects to date.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Deputy Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan is scheduled to visit the exhibition on Sept 17 at 8pm to meet with artists and collectors, as well as address the media.

Visitors can expect a dynamic experience throughout the two-month run, with Hoan Gallery introducing rotating selections of artworks alongside hands-on workshops and public programs.

A key highlight of the event is the exclusive preview of the “Under Sarawak Skies” documentary produced by Big Lau Studios, detailing the artists’ creative journey across the state.

Hoan Gallery team member Catherine Moo expressed deep satisfaction in seeing the project, which began back in June, come to fruition for Malaysia Day.

“Every artist has seen Sarawak differently, and that is what makes this exhibition so special. Together, the works show just how much there is to see, experience, and appreciate about Sarawak,” she said.

At its core, the exhibition serves as a tribute to the places, people and stories that make Sarawak unique.

All displayed artworks are available for purchase by visitors and art collectors.

Participating artists capture the finer details while sketching a couple dressed in traditional Iban attire during a visit to Patrick Libau Homestay in Niah, Miri.
