KUCHING (Oct 22): The Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) has granted RM1 million to the building fund of St Ann’s Church, Kota Padawan near here, said the church’s building committee chairman Philip Gaweng.

The grant will be used for the extension of the church, including the construction of a two-storey administrative office and a two-storey block of 15 classrooms for Sunday school and activity rooms, he said in a statement on Oct 21.

With the construction cost of RM6.698 million, the building would be fully complete by Oct 23 if the contractor does not claim any extension of time and once the occupational permit is given, St Ann’s Church would furnish the two buildings with furniture and interior decoration that would incur an additional cost of RM386,984.

The classroom block would also house a cafeteria and function rooms for parishioners, whereas the parish office block would house a two-storey gift shop with a spiral staircase design.

On Oct 21, Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang handed over the cheque from Unifor to the St Ann’s Church building committee.

“With the completion of the building, St Ann’s Church will have modern facilities or amenities to serve more than 20,000 parishioners from the vicinity of the Mile 10 area such as Kota Padawan, Padawan and Penrissen,” he said.

Also present were St Ann’s Church building committee member Judas Ligon and Friar Don Ramarez.
