SIBU: The University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) is gearing up to ascend as a global technical university, says Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.

The UTS Vice-Chancellor said that they have recently developed and documented their own UTS Strategic Plan 2024-2030 that articulated the university’s strategic direction to meet the emerging needs for quality skilled technical workforce and professionals, aligning with Sarawak’s ambition to transform into a developed and high-income economy by 2030.

“While putting the aspiration of the Sarawak Government at the forefront of our vision, UTS is also focusing on establishing its global footprint leveraging on the rapid advancement in digital technology to reach out to regional and international markets.

“Hence, it is our mission to provide global technical education through strategic collaboration and smart partnership, both locally and internationally,” he said in his welcoming speech at UTS 8th Convocation ceremony which was officiated by UTS Pro Chancellor, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today (Dec 17).

He also stressed that UTS is committed to be part of Sarawak Government’s journey focusing on sustainable and inclusive education as the government top priorities by providing free access to higher education.

“In addition, UTS will promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which is an essential part of Environment, Society and Governance (ESG) Strategy for a long term commitment towards sustainable society and the environment.

“The transformative nature of education based on ESD can guide people’s values and behaviour, pushing them to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle, and protecting the rights and well-being of future generations,” he said.

Khairuddin added that UTS is embarking on this responsibility to empower the society through inclusive education so that they will understand the importance of peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

“Therefore, at this juncture we would like to thank the Sarawak Government, especially YAB Datuk Patinggi Pro Canselor for giving us this opportunity and the continuous support to enable us to play our part in Sarawak’s transformation and development,” he said.
